These beautiful antique stoneware marmalade jars originate from W.P. Hartley’s in Liverpool & London and were made in the late 1800’s. Hand-carved vertical lines adorn these salt-glazed crocks. The horizontal indention at the top was a groove for the twine or string that was tied around the sealing paper.

The beauty of salt-glazed ceramics lies in the historic art of this technique. First used in Germany around 1400, the popularity of salt glazing spread across Europe to England and then made its way to Colonial America in the 1600’s. The gorgeous effect specific only to salt glaze came from throwing common salt into the kiln during the higher temperature part of the firing process and resulted in a glaze that was glossy, translucent and with a slightly orange-peel-like texture.

This type of glazed stoneware is special indeed. Use these antique crocks to hold utensils, wooden spoons, or paint brushes and pencils if you are an artist. The is some staining and glaze imperfections as shown in photos, but we think it just adds to the story of these very old pieces.
